Academia is going through a brain drain that they don't seem to realize is happening... 

The macro economics of academic research no longer make sense for aspiring young scholars who increasingly are setting out as intellectual entrepreneurs instead -- where they can create meaningful impact and address the great challenges in the world. At some point, this will become so jarring to universities that they will begin to transition to a new educational paradigm with different business models for investing in scholarly work of broad benefit to society. Otherwise the best and brightest will find themselves mostly outside of academia and it will wither into obsolescence.
